The Ettes
BIOGRAPHY
Founded in 2003 by Coco Hames and Poni Silver, The Ettes have long been a favorite of both garage rock purists and indie-pop fans, with critics praising the band for its “bristling sexy sound” (SPIN), “fuzzed out attitudinal romps” (Stereogum), and “ear throttling” anthems (GQ).
After putting out a home-recorded demos disc, Eat the Night, in 2005, the group released its proper debut album Shake The Dust in 2006 on Sympathy for the Record Industry. Produced by Liam Watson at London’s famed all-analog facility Toe Rag Studios, the disc was hailed as a “breathlessly tough modern garage rock record” (All Music).
The band followed with two more full-length albums in quick succession, Look at Life Again Soon (2008) Do You Want Power (2009), before reuniting with Watson for Wicked Will (2011).
Playing over a thousand shows during their peak years, The Ettes supported sold-out tours by The Black Keys, Kings of Leon, and The Dead Weather, shared stages with the The New York Dolls, The Go-Go's, Jay Reatard, Metric and Gossip, and performed at Lollapalooza and the Austin City Limits Festival.
The group’s hard charging signature song, “Crown of Age,” would as serve as the key track in Drew Barrymore’s 2009 roller-derby comedy Whip It!, and which The Ettes performed live on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon. The Ettes’ music would feature prominently in prestige programs (Friday Night Lights, Weeds) as well as reality TV fare (Keeping Up with the Kardashians, The Real World).
In 2010, Hames and Silver served in the all-star garage rock side project The Parting Gifts, along with members of The Reigning Sound, The Greenhornes and The Black Keys, for the Strychnine Dandelion LP, released on In the Red Records. In 2013, Hames and Silver co-founded the Fond Object record store and venue in East Nashville. In 2016, the group released a 10th anniversary edition of Shake The Dust on its own Fond Object record label.
In 2026, following a 13-year break, Hames and Silver have reformed The Ettes – abetted by esteemed multi-instrumentalist Jack Lawrence and producer/guitarist Dave Catching – with new music set to release throughout the year.
