The Idle Hands
The Idle Hands are what happens when two expatriate Irish brothers move across the pond, hole up in the studios of the frozen Midwest, and find themselves making music with their best friends. Now residing in Minneapolis, a city front man Ciaran has described as "Dr. Zhivago with bands," the Idles' combine glam, neo-New Wave, and disco with nods to everyone from Berlin-era Bowie to pre-Dig! Dandy's. Veering from knowing winks at the excesses of hipsterdom to heartbreaking sincerity and back again, their sound is equal parts louche hedonism and wistful melancholy.
The Idle Hands' most recent offering is their debut full length release "The Hearts We Broke on the Way to the Show" (Pretty Kids Collective), filled with songs about lust and longing, sordid affairs, brutal regrets, and the after parties that fuel them. The band's previous release, 2006's "Loaded EP," was recorded in L.A. with producer Mark Needham (The Killers, Bloc Party) and released in the UK on London's LaVolta records. The title track made a strong showing in the British indie charts and was the #1 most added song to indie radio in the US.
The forthcoming release features tracks from the "Loaded EP" and new tracks mixed and produced by Tony Lash (the Dandy Warhols, Elliott Smith) and engineered by the likes of Erik Applewick (Tapes 'n Tapes) and Chad Weiss (Mason Jennings).
Blending a love of literate English pop, with an American need to rock out uninhibitedly, The Idle Hands push all the right buttons without tripping over irony or wallowing in ennui. Perhaps it's the equation of the boy/girl/boy/girl/boy line-up now in place: Ciaran and his brother, Criostoir (bass), Eileen (keys) and her traveling companion Emma (guitar), and rhythm setter Nick (drums).
The band has energized audiences in Minneapolis, Chicago, and San Francisco and they do not plan on stopping...The Idle Hands will be supporting their full-length release in 2009 with touring, publicity stunts, and selective astral-traveling.
